  • This article articulates how our primary school focussed pre-order digital solution, School Food United, helps Sodexo to achieve their sustainabilty goals.

In 2019, Sodexo unveiled an ambition to cut food waste and loss by 50% across all its sites by 2025, putting it ahead of the United Nation’s call to halve food waste globally by 2030. In addition, Sodexo has also set a target to have 33% plant-based menus worldwide by 2025. The programme forms part of the organisation’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint by 34% by 2025.

How is School Food United helping Sodexo to achieve these sustainable targets?

    1. Reduces food waste due to overproduction as all meals are pre-ordered.

    2. Pre-orders and historic orders inform the kitchen of the food requirements, meaning they only stock what they need.

    3. Pupils get their favourites, meaning there are even less leftovers at the end of lunchtime.

    4. As a cashless pre order system, School Food United eliminates the need for transport such as cash in transit services and therefore removes the environmental impact that is required for banking physical cash.

    5. Order and transaction history is all available in the app, removing the requirement for printed receipts which saves paper and printing costs.

    6. We recognise that digital payments rely on devices such as smartphones and computers, which do require energy and resources to manufacture and operate. However, 87% of UK adults between 25 and 65 already have smartphones, which offsets some of the environmental impacts of digital payments.
