The delicious truth about chocolate and your health

This World Chocolate Day, John Core, Sodexo’s Culinary Nutrition Lead for Ireland, shares why chocolate can be a surprisingly healthy addition to your diet.

A treat with a history

Chocolate’s story begins over 3,000 years ago in Mesoamerica, where the Mayans and Aztecs revered cacao as both food and medicine. Consumed as a bitter, spiced drink, it was believed to boost vitality, aid digestion, and lift the spirit. When cacao reached Europe in the 16th century, it was embraced by the elite for its energising and restorative qualities.

Not all chocolate is created equal

Today, many commercial chocolates are packed with sugar, milk solids, and fats, which dilute the natural benefits of cacao. To unlock chocolate’s health potential, opt for dark chocolate with at least 70% cocoa content and minimal additives.

Why dark chocolate stands out

Dark chocolate is rich in flavonoids and polyphenols—plant compounds known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. These compounds help protect the body from oxidative stress, support heart health, and may even enhance brain function.

Key health benefits

  • Antioxidant boost: Cocoa is one of the most antioxidant-rich foods available. These antioxidants play a protective role in cardiovascular health, brain function, and skin integrity.
  • Heart & circulation: Flavonoids in dark chocolate improve blood flow and reduce blood pressure by enhancing nitric oxide production, which relaxes blood vessels.
  • Mood & mind: Chocolate contains tryptophan (a serotonin precursor), theobromine, and a small amount of caffeine—compounds that can lift mood, sharpen focus, and improve mental alertness.
  • Anti-inflammatory effects: Cocoa flavonoids help reduce inflammation, which supports cardiovascular health and may improve insulin sensitivity and blood sugar control.

A balanced indulgence

Regular, moderate consumption of dark chocolate with a high cocoa content can therefore be a beneficial dietary addition, especially when paired with an overall diet rich in whole, unprocessed foods.
